AVD manufactured a backfill rod handler under the direction of LGA (now WSP Global) for the Glencore Kidd Mine in Ontario. The handler is used to lower a string of ZW rods (8.625 inches, or 219 mm, in diameter) to a depth of 1,400 feet (427 metres). The rods return the tailings slurry, produced during mineral dressing, to the mine’s abandoned drifts, thus reducing the amount of tailings slurry stored at the surface and consolidating the ground above active drifts. Functional testing was carried out at Atelier Val-d’Or before the backfill rod handler was delivered to the mine.
